조지 소로스는 약 19년 동안 복리로 연 34%의 수익률을 올림으로써 공모 펀드의 자산관리자로서는 최고, 최장의 수익률을 기록한 바 있다. 규라소 섬에 본거지를 둔 그의 퀀텀펀드는 규모가 자그마치 20억 달러에 달한다. 펀드 자산의 약 25%를 소유하고 있는 그는 개인적으로도 상당한 부를 축적하고 있는데, 헝가리 태생의 유대인으로 56년 미국으로 이민했다.
30년 헝가리 부다페스트에서 유태인 변호사였던 아버지 아래 태어난 소로스는 나치가 유럽을 장악하면서 학살의 위협 속에서 살아야 했다. 철도역 짐꾼, 여행 세일즈맨, 은행 수습사원, 웨이터, 마네킹 조립공장 직원 등을 하며 어렵게 살았다. 그는 “무일푼 시절의 기억이 오늘의 나를 만들었다”고 말했다.

85억 달러(약 8조원)의 재산을 소유한 그는 경제 전문지 포브스가 선정한 미국 27대 부자다. 79년 설립한 자선단체 열린사회재단을 운영하는 세계적인 자선사업가로도 유명하다. 지난해 23억6700만 달러를 기부해 경제주간지 비즈니스위크가 발표한 세계 자선사업가 4위에 올랐다.그의 투자내용을 살펴보면 대규모로 신용거래를 하였으며 일반 상품, 외환, 주식 그리고 채권 등에 다각적인 국제적 투자를 했다. 특히 펀드 자본은 원칙적으로 주식에 투자하고 현물이나 외환에 대한 투기는 선물이나 차입금을 이용했다. 그의 투자방식은 투기적인 방법을 즐겼으며 고도의 세련된 기술과 매일매일의 끊임없는 집중력이 철저히 요구되는 것이었다.런던대학 경제학부를 졸업하고 몇 개의 증권회사의 주식분석가 및 펀드담당자로 근무하다가 39세에 독립하면서 퀀텀펀드를 설립했다. 퀀텀펀드의 승승장구로 그는 국제적인 명성을 얻으면서 부와 명예를 동시에 얻게 된다.
